Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

Yes. F16 is not a machine fault — it is a detergent dosage issue. The machine is safe to use. Simply reduce the detergent amount and run extra rinses to clear the current foam.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Yes. The code clears after a reset, but if you use the same detergent amount, it will return. Fix the detergent dosage.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: Foam is overflowing from the detergent drawer, Foam is leaking from the door seal.

Symptoms You May Notice

Foam visible through the door

You can see excessive suds inside the drum through the glass door

Machine adds extra rinse cycles

The machine tries to rinse away the excess foam, extending cycle time significantly

Machine pauses during the cycle

The control board pauses to allow foam to subside

Residue on clothes

Detergent residue remains on fabrics after the cycle

Possible Causes

1

Too Much Detergent

The most common cause — more detergent than recommended was used.

DIY Possible
2

Wrong Detergent Type

Non-HE (high-efficiency) detergent produces much more foam in modern front-loaders.

DIY Possible
3

Detergent Drawer Residue

Old detergent buildup in the drawer releases extra soap during cycles.

DIY Possible
4

Very Soft Water

Soft water requires less detergent — using the standard amount produces excess foam.

5

Turbidity Sensor Fault

In rare cases, the sensor incorrectly detects foam when there is none.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Reduce Detergent

Use the amount recommended by Miele for your water hardness. For HE detergent in soft water, this can be as little as half the cap.

If you see foam through the door during a cycle, you are using too much.

  2. 2

    Switch to HE Detergent

Ensure you are using HE-rated detergent designed for front-load machines.

Look for the HE symbol on the bottle/box.

  3. 3

    Clean the Detergent Drawer

Remove the detergent drawer (it usually has a release tab). Wash it thoroughly under warm water to remove all residue.

Use a small brush to clean the drawer cavity in the machine as well.

  4. 4

    Run an Extra Rinse

Run a rinse-only cycle to flush remaining suds from the system.

You may need 2-3 extra rinse cycles if the foam is heavy.

  5. 5

    Power Reset

Turn off at mains for 5 minutes after the extra rinse cycles clear the foam.

F16 should not return if you reduce the detergent amount going forward.
