Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Without fan extraction, cooking fumes, grease particles, and moisture are not removed — use alternative ventilation while cooking.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. A power reset may fix a control board glitch. It will not fix a failed motor or capacitor.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Burning smell from the motor area, The hood trips the circuit breaker.
Symptoms You May Notice
Fan does not spin
Pressing fan speed buttons lights up the indicator but produces no airflow.
Fan only works on one speed
Only the highest speed works, or only the lowest.
Fan is very noisy
Grinding, rattling, or buzzing sounds from the motor area.
Lights work, fan doesn't
The hood has power (lights turn on) but the extraction fan is dead.
Possible Causes
Motor capacitor failed
The run capacitor that helps start and drive the fan motor has failed. This is the most common cause of a dead fan on older hoods.
Requires ProfessionalFan motor burned out
The fan motor winding has failed — often preceded by months of gradually increasing noise.
Requires ProfessionalFan blade obstructed
Grease buildup or a foreign object is preventing the fan from spinning.
DIY PossibleSpeed control board problem
The electronic board that controls fan speed has a failed component.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Listen carefully
Press the fan speed button and listen. A humming sound with no airflow means the motor is trying but the fan is stuck or the capacitor has failed.
No sound at all = motor or control board issue. Humming = capacitor or obstruction.
-
2
Check for obstruction
Remove the grease filters. Look into the fan area for visible grease buildup, debris, or a foreign object blocking the fan blade.
On some models, heavy grease accumulation can seize the fan bearing.
-
3
Power reset
Turn off at breaker for 1 minute, then back on. Test the fan.
A control board glitch can sometimes be resolved by a full power cycle.
