Miele Tumble Dryer Lint Filter Fire Risk — T1 Series

Safety Notice Summary

Miele issued a corrective action notice for certain T1 series heat-pump tumble dryers. The notice addresses a design characteristic in the lint filtration system where fine lint particles can bypass the main filter and accumulate in the heat exchanger compartment over extended use. If not addressed through regular maintenance, this accumulation can restrict airflow and, in extreme cases, pose a fire risk.

Affected Models

The safety notice covers the following T1 series models manufactured between 2016 and 2020:

  • TMB 140 WP / TMB 340 WP / TMB 540 WP
  • TMG 440 WP / TMG 640 WP / TMG 840 WP
  • TMR 840 WP (heat-pump dryers with EcoSpeed technology)
  • TWF 500 WP / TWF 720 WP

The model number is printed on the rating plate inside the dryer door frame. Check your specific serial number with Miele customer support to confirm whether your unit requires service.

Hazard

Fine lint particles that bypass the primary filter can gradually accumulate on the heat exchanger fins. Over months or years of regular use without cleaning, this buildup can restrict the airflow through the heat pump system. Restricted airflow causes the dryer to operate at higher internal temperatures, which in rare cases can lead to overheating and potential ignition of accumulated lint.

The risk is elevated when the dryer is used frequently (daily or near-daily cycles) and the secondary lint filter in the heat exchanger compartment is not cleaned periodically.

What to Do

Miele recommends the following steps for owners of affected models:

  1. Clean the primary lint filter after every drying cycle — this is standard practice for all tumble dryers.
  2. Clean the secondary lint filter in the heat exchanger compartment at least once per month. Refer to your operating manual for the location and cleaning procedure.
  3. Contact Miele customer support at 1-800-999-1360 to schedule a free inspection and cleaning of the heat exchanger compartment.
  4. A Miele technician will clean the heat exchanger, inspect the airflow path, and install an updated filter mesh if applicable.

This service is provided at no cost for all affected models, regardless of warranty status.

Prevention Tips

To minimize lint accumulation and maintain safe, efficient dryer operation:

  • Clean the primary lint filter after every load
  • Clean the heat exchanger lint filter monthly
  • Ensure the dryer has adequate ventilation clearance behind and around the unit
  • Do not overload the drum beyond the rated capacity
  • Schedule professional maintenance annually for dryers older than 3 years
