Advisory Summary
Miele has issued a food safety advisory reminding owners of Miele refrigerators and freezers to verify that their appliance is operating at the correct temperature. Incorrect temperature settings — often caused by accidental adjustment, power outages, or sensor misreading after door seal degradation — can allow harmful bacteria to multiply in stored food without visible signs of spoilage.
Affected Models
This advisory applies to all Miele cooling appliances:
- K series freestanding refrigerators (K 12020, K 12820, K 28202 D, K 4323)
- KF series fridge-freezer combinations (KF 2801 Vi, KF 2901 Vi, KFN 7764 D)
- F series freezers (F 12020, F 12820, FN 12420, FNS 7140 E)
- Built-in models (K 7000, K 2801 Vi, K 2901 Vi series)
Recommended Temperature Settings
For food safety, maintain the following temperatures:
- Refrigerator compartment: 4°C (39°F) or below. The danger zone for bacterial growth begins at 5°C (41°F).
- Freezer compartment: −18°C (0°F) or below. This temperature halts bacterial growth entirely.
- BioFresh / PerfectFresh zones: 0°C to 3°C depending on the drawer setting — check that the humidity slider is correctly positioned for the food type stored.
Verification Steps
To verify your appliance is at the correct temperature:
- Check the digital temperature display on your appliance. If your model has no display, place a refrigerator thermometer in the centre of the middle shelf and check after 2 hours.
- After a power outage, allow 4–6 hours for the refrigerator to return to target temperature before assuming food is safe.
- If the temperature alarm has triggered, inspect all perishable items and discard anything that has been above 5°C for more than 2 hours.
- Inspect the door seal by closing the door on a sheet of paper — if the paper slides out easily, the seal may be compromised and should be replaced.
When to Contact Miele Service
Contact Miele if the appliance cannot maintain the set temperature despite correct settings and a clean condenser, or if the compressor runs continuously without reaching target temperature. These symptoms may indicate a refrigerant leak or compressor problem that requires professional repair.
