Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Compressor overload means the motor is at risk of damage. Clean the coils, improve ventilation, and reset — but if the overload keeps tripping, stop using and call a technician.
Can I reset the code?
Yes. Yes — the thermal overload resets after a cooling-off period (30+ minutes). Address the root cause (coils, ventilation) to prevent recurrence.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Overload trips repeatedly, Burning smell.
Symptoms You May Notice
Compressor stops running
Compressor shuts off and won't restart immediately
Clicking sounds
Overload relay clicking every few minutes
Rising temperatures
Without the compressor, cooling stops
F11 on display
Compressor overload protection triggered
Possible Causes
Dirty Condenser Coils
Dust-clogged coils cause the compressor to overheat.
DIY PossiblePoor Ventilation
Insufficient airflow around the fridge.
DIY PossibleHigh Ambient Temperature
Room too hot for the compressor to cope.
DIY PossibleStart Relay Failing
A failing relay makes the compressor work harder.
Requires ProfessionalLow Refrigerant
The compressor works harder with insufficient refrigerant.
Requires ProfessionalCompressor Wearing Out
Internal wear increases current draw.
Requires ProfessionalSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Clean Condenser Coils
Unplug the fridge. Vacuum or brush the condenser coils thoroughly.
This is the #1 cause of compressor overload.
Tools required -
2
Improve Ventilation
Ensure at least 5-10 cm clearance behind and on the sides. Move the fridge away from heat sources.
Placing a fridge next to an oven is a common problem.
-
3
Extended Power Reset
Leave the fridge off for at least 30 minutes to let the compressor fully cool down.
The thermal protector needs time to reset.
-
4
Reduce Load
Remove some items and avoid opening the door. A lighter load means less work for the compressor.
Don't put hot food in the fridge.
-
5
Restart and Monitor
Plug back in and listen for normal compressor operation.
If it runs for a while then trips again, the issue is deeper.
