Answer to continue safely

Is it safe to keep using?

No. A motor fault prevents washing and spinning. Running the machine with a faulty motor can cause further damage. Resolve F50 before use.

Can I reset the code?

Yes. Yes, but only effective if the cause was an overloaded drum or temporary overload. If the motor has failed, F50 will return.

When to stop immediately?

Stop if you notice: The motor makes no sound at all, The machine trips the breaker.

Symptoms You May Notice

Drum does not turn

The machine fills with water but the drum remains stationary

Motor hums but drum does not spin

You hear the motor straining but no rotation

Drum spins briefly then stops

The motor starts but cuts out almost immediately

F50 appears during wash or spin

The code can trigger in any phase where the motor should be active

Possible Causes

1

Worn Carbon Brushes

On brush-type motors, the carbon brushes wear down over time and eventually cannot make proper contact. Most common cause on older models.

2

Motor Control Module Fault

The inverter or motor control board has failed — it cannot supply the correct power to the motor.

Requires Professional
3

Overloaded Drum

Too much laundry in the drum creates excessive load, preventing the motor from reaching speed.

4

Jammed Drum

An object caught between the drum and the outer tub prevents rotation.

5

Failed Motor Windings

The motor coils have burned out or developed a short circuit.

Safe Checks You Can Do

These checks are safe for homeowners. No disassembly required. Do not remove panels or access internal components.
  1. 1

    Reduce the Load

Open the machine (if possible) and remove some items. An overloaded drum can prevent the motor from starting.

Follow Miele's load guidelines — typically 7-9 kg max depending on model.

  2. 2

Try to Turn the Drum by Hand

With the machine off, reach in and try to rotate the drum. It should turn freely with light resistance from the belt.

If the drum is completely stuck, something may be jammed behind it.

  3. 3

    Power Reset

Turn off at mains for 10 minutes. Run an empty drain/spin cycle as a test.

If the motor works with an empty drum but fails under load, the load was too heavy or the motor is weakening.

  4. 4

    Listen to the Motor

Start a cycle with a small load. Listen: a healthy motor ramps up smoothly. Buzzing without rotation suggests worn brushes. Complete silence suggests no power reaching the motor.

Brush-type motors make a soft crackling sound — silence means the brushes are completely worn.

  5. 5

    Check for Tripped Breaker

A motor with shorted windings can trip the household breaker. Check your breaker panel.

If the breaker trips when the motor phase starts, do not keep resetting it.
